Depending on your heritage, your last name could have some Brazilian roots. Brazil is a melting pot that features several languages and cultures. Find out more information below on naming history and check to see if your surname made the list.

Origin of Brazilian Surnames

Brazil is the largest country in South America and many of its last names come from other countries. In the 18th to 20 centuries, people from all over immigrated and colonized Brazil. This included Portugal, Spain, Italy, Japan, and more. If you have Portuguese ancestry, your family may have ties to Brazil. The colonization also is a major reason why Brazil’s official language is Portuguese and also why the Brazilian people adopted the Portuguese people’s naming traditions.

Naming Traditions in Brazil

When it comes to last names, the people of Brazil typically have two. They take on both their mother and father’s surnames to continue both family lines. Most Brazilian women will drop their mother’s name and replace it with their husband’s name after marriage. Though, it is not uncommon for some women to keep both and have three surnames.
Place names were most commonly the inspiration behind choosing a family’s last name. Brazil is a country that wants to preserve its history and using places as the base of last names helps them to do that. “Silva” is the most common surname in Brazil.
