  • German (southwest and Rhineland) and Dutch : from Middle High German salm, Dutch zalm ‘salmon’, probably in most cases a habitational name from a house distinguished by the sign of a salmon, but in some cases an occupational name for a salmon fisher.
  • German : habitational name from Salm on the Mosel, or from Salm in Alsace.
  • Dutch (Van Salm) : habitational name from Zalm in Dutch Limburg or Vielsalm in the Belgian province of Luxembourg.
