  • South German : from a dialect diminutive of Fass ‘cask’, ‘barrel’; probably a nickname for a short, rotund person, or a habitational name for someone living at a house or tavern distinguished by the sign of a barrel. In some cases it may be an Americanized spelling of Fässle or Fassl, of like meaning and application.
