  • North German : from German Eiche ‘oak’ (probably standardized from Middle Low German eke) + Middle Low German horst ‘brushy area’; a topographic name for someone who lived in an area of oak scrubland, or a habitational name from any of several northeastern German places so named, for example in Mecklenburg and Pomerania.
