To most, New Years resolutions are rarely fun and and rarely successful. This year, buck the trend of unrealistic expectations and vow to adopt one of these healthy habits for your family. They're easy to stick with and good for your health, and they're a great way to spend more quality time with your kids and spouse!

Cut Back on Screen Time
Screen-Free Week isn't until the end of April, but why not start cutting back now?

Try setting aside one night a week for TV- and computer-free activities. Having trouble coming up with some ideas? Our activities center and family entertainment center can help!

Family playing board games
Have Family Game Night
What better way to cut back on screen-time and spend some QT with your kids than to have a designated family game night?

Once a week, once a month — whatever fits your schedule — grab your family's favorite board game and settle in for a night of friendly competition. We guarantee it will quickly become a new family tradition.

Explore Your Palate
If you want to clean up your diet, giving up chocolate or setting a strict diet plan for yourself isn't necessarily the healthiest way to go. (Who would ever want to give up chocolate, anyway?)

Instead, aim to try one new recipe a month. Whether you get creative with an ethnic dish, or try a new twist on an old favorite, cooking as a family is a great way to explore healthy eating while connecting with your kids.

Catch Up on Sleep
Lack of sleep has been linked to anything from moodiness to childhood obesity. Resolve to squeeze in a few more hours of sleep a week — your body will thank you!

Set Regular Date Nights
With full-time jobs, kids at home, and monotonous day-to-day tasks to complete, it's easy to fall into a comfortable (and let's face it — boring) routine with your spouse.

Luckily, it's also easy to put the romance back into your relationship. Try to plan a date night at least once a month. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you are able to reconnect and enjoy each others' company. And if you're looking for more ideas, check out these 10 tips to spice up your marriage.

Set One Fitness Goal
Vowing to work out every single day isn't just ambitious — it's unrealistic, and a sure-fire way to set yourself up for failure. Instead, set one fitness goal you'd like to accomplish this year, and work towards achieving it.

Whether you've always wanted to run a road race, perform a specific yoga pose, or simply have the energy to keep up with your kids, having a set goal will help you stay motivated, and will leave you with a great sense of accomplishment when you achieve it!

You can even get the kids involved with these great family fitness ideas.

Try a New Hobby
Resolutions don't always have to be about losing weight or eating better.

Have you always wanted to take a pottery class? Or learn Spanish? What's stopping you? This year, vow to try one hobby that has always piqued your interest, whether it's an art class, outdoor activity, or book club.

If you make time to do the things you want to do, it will make you happier and healthier in the long run!

Drink More Water
Do you drink enough water? Probably not. Try to get in the habit of taking a water bottle with you everywhere you go. If plain water isn't your thing, spruce it up with a little lemon, lime, or other citrus fruit.
Pile of chocolate chip cookies
Indulge Yourself
So you're craving a cookie? Indulge your craving and have a cookie. Just don't eat the whole box.

Studies have shown that severely depriving yourself of indulgences (like chocolate or french fries) will almost always lead to binging down the road. So allow yourself some treats in moderation, and even it out with a smart food choice, like a piece of fruit. You'll be happier and most likely, it will lead to smarter diet choices.

Relax and Have Fun
Above all else, remember to have fun. Resolutions shouldn't be about restricting or depriving yourself — they should be about how you can improve your life to be the healthiest, happiest parent you can be!
