Pace and Count

By recording the number of steps it takes to get to different places, your child will build his math skills and learn about the benefits of exercise.

Pace and Count

Time

  • 20 to 30 minutes

Materials

  • Paper
  • Pen or pencil

Directions

In this game, pacing is the purpose, not a way to kill time. Use a pencil and paper to measure and record distances around the house in steps. Examples might be steps to the mailbox, to the front door, to the corner, etc.

Extensions

  • Explore the neighborhood in the same way.
  • Buy inexpensive pedometers and measure how far you both go in a set amount of time.
  • Chart several days, striving to increase the steps while talking about the benefits of exercise.
