Yes to the CSA

March 03,2009
A couple weeks ago I made mention that our family was toying with the idea of joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Co-op. After a little bit of discussion and with an excited spirit, we decided to dive headfirst into the wonderful world of CSAs. Now that we’ve made the decision to buy a share of the New Century CSA, I am anxiously awaiting our first delivery. On top of buying a share of vegetables, we also added blackberries, strawberries, and peaches to our list of share items. As I type this, the weather is in the 30s and I am *more* than ready for spring, so the idea that some day soon fresh peaches will be delivered to our door makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. The more I’ve learned about CSAs, the more excited I have become. The family we’re supporting has four young boys: They invite CSA supporters to their farm for a visit, and I can just imagine R and G taking in the farm life, eyeing the tractor, and having their eyes opened to yet another wonderful experience. Interested in a CSA in your neck of the woods? Check out for great information and a search engine for all the CSAs in the country, searchable by zip code. In addition, this site has great information on local foods and farmers’ markets. You can also purchase unique foods directly from small farms, as well as heirloom and organic seeds and seedlings. If you are interested in supporting local farms, this is the site for you! Oh, and as for my kohlrabi hesitation? New Century allows you to specifically request a vegetable or two you do not want to receive, but I think I am going to go ahead and try it…who knows, we might just like it! SPC
