Is the "One Million Moms" J.C. Penney Boycott a "Witchhunt" Against Ellen?

February 10,2012

An unlikely voice spoke up for Ellen DeGeneres this week: Bill O'Reilly. J.C. Penney recently chose Ellen, who is openly gay, as their new spokesperson, sparking outrage among conservative Christian group, One Million Moms, who are boycotting the store because they want Ellen replaced.

On Tuesday night's "O'Reilly Factor," the Fox News pundit defended J.C. Penney's employment of Ellen and compared the One Million Moms movent to '50s McCarthyism. He also called the situation a "witchhunt" and "against the spirit of America."

Ellen herself took a lighter approach in her response to One Million Mom's assertion that J.C. Penney had a “pro-gay bandwagon." On her show on Wednesday, DeGeneres quipped. “Being gay or pro-gay isn’t a bandwagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. And occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family’ but that’s about it.”

Opposition groups, such as "1 Million Moms against One Million Moms," are popping up on Facebook in support of J.C. Penney and Ellen. All this coincides with a week when Proposition 8, California's same-sex marriage ban, was ruled unconstitutional, putting gay rights on many people's minds.

What's your take on J.C. Penney/Ellen vs. One Million Moms? As I see it, Ellen is a very cool, stylish star and a great role model, especially for gay teens struggling with much larger issues than where their mom shops.
