Family name origins & meanings

  • German : possibly a variant of Bason, which is likewise unexplained.
  • French (Walloon) : from Walloon posson ‘beer jug’, ‘water jug’, from Old French poçon ‘jar’, ‘jug’, applied as a nickname, metonymic occupational name, or house name.
  • Most if not all American bearers of this name are probably descended from Johann Nicolas Bason (1675–1728), who came to Somerville, NJ, from Nierstein, Germany, in about 1710–13.
