Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : topographic name from kallio ‘rock’. This is an old surname that dates back to the 16th century; it was also widely adopted during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and was one of the many words denoting natural features taken by Finns to replace Swedish surnames, in this case, particularly Swedish surnames containing the elements -berg or -sten.
