Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : habitational name from a farmstead or village so named, from huhta ‘glade’, ‘forest clearing’, commonly denoting an area of land that had been cleared of forest in order to produce farmland. Compare Aho. Villages called Huhta, Huhtaa, and Huhti are found in western Finland. In some cases the American surname may be a shortened form of some other name formed with this word (for example, see Huhtala).
