  • Spanish and Portuguese : from cerda ‘bristle’, ‘hair’ (Late Latin cirra), apparently a nickname for someone with a prominent tuft of hair. One of the sons of King Alfonso X (1221–84) was known as Fernando de la Cerda.
  • Catalan (Cerdà) : regional name, cerdà, for someone from La Cerdanya, a Catalan district in the Pyrenees which is currently situated partly in Spain and partly in France.
