Family name origins & meanings

  • Portuguese (Cândido) and Italian : from Portuguese cândido, Italian candito ‘(shining) white’ (Latin candidus, a derivative of candere ‘to be white’), hence a nickname for someone with white hair. The word also came to mean ‘innocent’, ‘simple’, and the surname may often originally have had this sense.
