Family name origins & meanings

  • Swiss German : perhaps an occupational name for a builder of fireplaces and chimneys or a derogatory nickname for someone allowed his chimney to catch fire (for which the owner was fined), from Middle High German kamen ‘chimney’, ‘fireplace’ + the base of the agent noun from the verb zünden ‘to set on fire’, ‘burn’.
