Family name origins & meanings

  • Irish : variant of Boyle.
  • Altered spelling of German Bohle or Boll.
  • Norwegian (Bøle) : habitational name from any of the farmsteads so named, from Old Norse bøli ‘farm’.
  • Slovenian : probably from a medieval altered short form of the personal name Valentin (see Valentine). Replacement of initial V with B and alternation between the vowels a and o is quite common in Slovenian surnames.
