  • Czech and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : from beran ‘ram’, hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble a ram in some way, for example, someone with curly hair. It is also found as a nickname for a pig-headed or arrogant person and as a derogatory nickname for a Protestant.
