Family name origins & meanings

  • English : habitational name from any of several places called Barrington. The one in Gloucestershire is named with the Old English personal name Beorn + -ing- denoting association + tūn ‘settlement’. In the Somerset place name the first element is an unattested Old English personal name Bāra, which also occurs, in the genitive form, as the first element of the Cambridgeshire place name.
  • Irish : adopted as an English form of Gaelic Ó Bearáin (see Barnes 3).
