Family name origins & meanings

  • North German (Bäcker) and Dutch : variant of Becker.
  • Northern English : topographic name for someone who lived on a hill or at the rear of a settlement, from Middle English bakke ‘back’, ‘spine’ + the suffix -er denoting an inhabitant.
  • Danish and Norwegian : probably of German origin (see 1), but in Norway this is also a spelling variant of the habitational name Bakker.
