Brief summary:
After a kerosene accident in the kitchen, Billie Jo and her pregnant mother are badly burned. Piano, the instument Billie Jo loves, can no longer be played because of her scarred hands. After her mother dies giving birth to a son, he dying as well, Billie Jo and her wheat-farming father are left alone in Kansas, alone in the dust.
