Grade level:
K-2

Objectives:
1. To facilitate meeting new friends ? ?break the ice.?
2. Promote name recognition.
3. Share in creating a class book together.

Materials needed:
9x12 white art paper; Teacher-made colorful cover entitled
ôMaking New Friendsö crayons

Time estimate to complete:
20-30 minutes

Procedure:
1. Teacher and children sit facing each other in a circle
2. Each child stands, tells name, and what she/he likes to do
3. Teacher shares the importance of meeting new friends and the pleasure of creating a class book.
4. Children each draw a self-portrait for book and teacher labels it with their name using a marker.
5. Teacher will share book when time permits during the day.
Place the new book in the class library. Date this picture, then have children draw a comparison portrait in the spring to use to evaluate growth.
