Description of safety strategy:
Children have a lot going on in their heads. Probably the furthest thing from their minds is dying. The fact of the matter is, too many children are losing their lives needlessly due to lack of knowledge when coming and going on the street.
We live in a society that is much too indifferent with the violence that permeates within. Some motorists choose to use their autos as a form of intimidation and/or destruction. In all cases, the average pedestrian will lose.
Often times motorists are not paying attention to their surroundings. All too often mistakes are made which will last a lifetime. We need to educate our children as to the consequences of driving while distracted, or walking with our head in the clouds. Not only is this the responsibility of parents, but schools must also share in the safety educational process as well. I have seen, first hand, just how dangerous it really is out on the "Mean Streets" of America......Crossing Guards are the buffer between that 3000 lb. auto and your child. They not only have the duty of ensuring that your child will make it safely across the road, but they have the added responsibility of educating your young one about traffic safety.
As parents, we need to set the example, both while behind the wheel, and when walking out on the street. The lives of our little ones depends on it. Take the time to see it from the pedestrian's perspective. Get out and walk on the streets with your child, and experience first hand, what it is to be a pedestrian.
The state of California mandates that the pedestrian has the right of way in the crosswalk.....Realistically, some drives literally don't see the forest because of the trees. Children view life through a child's eyes. Consequently, their trial and error experiences are often times limited. Mistakes are a part of the learning process. Big mistakes often lead to dramatic consequences.
Let's keep our kids safe.....Set a good example.
