My son (6) thinks this is a cool costume, and we might go with it, because it really suits the climate here, and ya can't beat the price! ;-)
He is a Gadget Freak, so I should not be surprised by the attraction.
The "Hardware Sling" is the Numero Uno item. It's nylon webbing or an old leather belt big enough to sling over one shoulder. The one in the pic I saw basically has Kitchen junk drawer clink-clanky items attached to it: tea infusers, old keys n' rings, watch w/dead battery, teaspoons, small strainer...there's also a nylon "stuff sack" hanging on there. Virtually anything "gadgety" works here, visually and sound-wise.
Instructions:
Well, I covered some of that...the rest of the Look involves sweats, athletic socks, hiking boots/athletic shoes, polarfleece jacket/vest, hat (esp. w/ outdoors-y logo).
I think the point is to look like an over-accessorized Yuppie outdoor person ready for an expedition...the kind who would take a battery-operated coffee grinder and a particular kind of gourmet beans...which reminds me: an empty can of Beans (small) should clank nicely next to the Cub Scout canteen...in the pic I saw of Rock Climber ("Make Believe, a book of costume and Fantasy" by Klutz Press), even the family dog is into the sports attire schtick.
Other information to consider:
I can't visualize a teacher appreciating a clink-clanking costume at school parties, but I like it for night...in fact, I will fill his canteen with Water if it'll weigh the kid down, slow him down so I can keep up easier...or bring him home sooner if he Drinks it...
