What age group is this costume for?
Preschool and Younger
Estimated time required to make this costume:
4 hours
Difficulty level:
Almost as easy - some sewing
Items you will need: (Hit your return key to start a new line)
Sweatsuit or long johns
Knit hat that snaps under chin (in a color to match the suit)
Yarn for the tail and mane (varied colors look really nice)
3 small bottles of fabric paint (varied colors to match the yarn)
2 squares of fabric foam for wings
5 large safety pins
Needle with hole large enough for the yarn
Felt to match the hat (for ears)
Instructions:
Cut yarn in 10 inch pieces and sew it thru the hat so that two (2) 5 inch pieces stick out. Tie knot so it does not fall out. Repeat this from back of hat to 2 inches from front. Repeat to make a 2 inch wide mohawk. Cut shorter yarn (5 inch pieces) to finish mohawk to the front. Cut out 2 felt triangles (2 1/2 inches) and sew for ears where the yarn mohawk goes from long to short. Cut more yarn 24 inches long for the tail. Tie a bundle (about 1 1/2 inches around) directly in middle (at 12 inches), bend in half and tie again about 2 inches from first tie. The tail can be attached using a safety pin. Decorate with the craft paint swirls and wiggles throughout the suit and hat (we used glitter paint in a pen form). Cut 2 wings from the felt and decorate with paints. The wings will be attached with 2 safety pins on each.
Other information to consider:
I attached the wings and the tail with safety pins so my son could fit into the car seat. Just remove for driving. If you are not driving anywhere, you can sew the wings on. Do not leave small child unattended with the foam wing - they may tear them up and cause a choking hazard.
