What age group is this costume for?
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Estimated time required to make this costume:
2 hours depending upon clothes on hand (not counting any shopping)

Difficulty level:
Quick and easy - no sewing required

Items you will need: (Hit your return key to start a new line)
White T-Shirt
Blue Blazer
Red/White Pants
Red/White/Blue Top Hat
White Stick (optional)

Instructions:
Actual colors do not matter--just make the entire outfit red, white, and blue.

Blazer: I modified a plain 3-quarter length sleeve ladies' unlined blazer by using safety pins to pin up the front so that it would appear as a jacket on my son and left the back just hang to represent coat tails.

Striped Pants: Use jog pants and colored electrical tape to make stripes.

Top Hat: I had gotten it at a 4th of July parade, but it could be made completely out of cardboard, posterboard, or fabric (or even a large can--without sharp edges--and a cardboard brim if it fits the head).

White Stick: Any appropriate sized stick (from the yard) painted white will do.

Other information to consider:
Can add a flag pin or stars to lapel. The stick may get in the way of walking and handling the treat bag, too. I hear I can also dust hair with flour to make it appear grey. Use face paint to put on a white mustache and goatee beard. Suggest stuffing tissue paper or plastic bags into the hat (if made from cloth) so it will stand up on the head better.
