Description of method:
We started on a Monday with the child's potty in the TV room with a towel under it. For the first day my son only wore a shirt. At night we tried the bulky pull-up pants. He didn't like them. So every night the potty chair went with him to his room for bed. By the third day we went straight to underwear. On Friday night we had company come over so the potty chair went in the bathroom for 'his privacy'. That night he woke up and went in the potty chair in his room at 2 am. Be sure to have a few strong night lights available to make finding the potty easy. When going to stores and shopping, my son is too short to stand and pee and the seats are far too messy to sit on so I taught him to kneel on the side of the seat in the ladies room. I feel safer about the germs and keep wipes with me wherever we go.
We had our share of accidents, but who doesn't. Stay positive and encouraging even during accidents. Plan your outings around potty time and learn your child before you try long trips to avoid accidents that can set him/her back. My son trained at 3 years 2 months. Now my younger son is turning 2 years and already knows when he has to go and now we're just working on consistency.
