Description of method:
Take a deep breath. We all wait and wait for this time to come. NO MORE DIAPERS!! Start your potty training when you are ready. If you are uncomfortable starting, then you might want to wait. Your child will be able to sense your uncomfortable feelings. A great way to start is by letting your child wear an oversized tee shirt with no diaper. That way when it's time for potty nothing is in their way. Try not to put a diaper on your child. That sends mixed messages. Of course the night time diaper is expected. When your child wakes up and you change the diaper, make note of the icky diaper. That way they get a sense of what they do in that diaper. I used things like "Oh, yuck, pee pee in your diaper. What stinks? Did you pee pee in your diapee? Let's go pee pee in the BIG GIRLS/BOYS potty just like mommy/daddy." Our children are not stupid. Don't let them trick you. They know what they do in the diaper. Therefore I have found when you address it and give it a name, they will understand you better. "Did you go pee pee in the diapee?" This lets them know what it is called then when you say "Lets go pee pee in the big potty." they are getting the idea of what you want them to do. If you bring out a potty chair and expect them to learn with no help and interaction, you're going to be waiting. Never, never forget the After Potty Parties. Let them know how good they are and how proud you are. When accidents occur (and many will), it's best to let them know it was an accident, no big deal, and they can use the potty chair next time.
