Description of method:
We avoided "pushing" our daughter into potty training. When she was about 19 months old it dawned on us that her diapers are so absorbent that the she probably didn't even realize when she was peeing. We decided to let her run around diaperless for a couple hours a day. The first time she peed, she looked down in surprise at what happened. She had no idea. We did the "uh oh" routine, calmed her down & pointed at the potty. The second time it happened (we have wood floors, so no biggie), she seemed to make the connection between the feeling of needing to pee and actually releasing it. By the third time she needed to "go" she ran to the potty on her own.

Aside from the streaking, she also got plenty of positive encouragement from Mommy & Daddy when she sat on the potty, and big cheers when she succeeded. Plus, one of her favorite books is "Once Upon a Potty", by Alona Frankel. Anyway, once she had the idea, we switched to panties. She went in them thinking they were like the diapers. Of course, they're different and made her feel uncomfortable. We did the "uh oh" routine the same way and explained that pee pee and poo poo belongs in the potty, not her panties.

She's 25 months old now & only has accidents occasionally, but they are the result of not quite making it in time. She tries. Even at night. On most days we still allow her to play in the nude for a while if she wants to. Before she gets dressed, we tell her to go use the potty.

The basic idea is that kids won't use the potty unless there is a positive reason to do so, and an immediate negative reason for not doing it. Being diaperless provides immediate negative reinforcement. One warning: we don't have a son. My guess (as a man myself) is that incorporating a little streaking in the potty training technique is more effective for girls than it is for boys. Boys' plumbing allows them to find pleasure in "aiming" at things other than the toilet, so watch out!

Recommended age for this method:
After they can walk

How long should it take for child to be potty trained by this method?
Sooner than without it
