This book is appropriate for fifth graders. There are very few pictures, and all are done in black and white. The original Signet edition illustrations were done by Sam Savitt. Lad, a collie has many adventures. This heartwarming book is told from the dog's point of view. He was an actual dog owned by the author and most of the events in the book actually happened. However, it reads like a fiction book.

There is a second book of Lad's adventures, called "Lad of Sunnybank."
