Brief summary:
Officer Buckle hold school assemblies to teach schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. But the assemblies are so boring that all the children just sleep through them until Gloria the police dog comes along and pantomimes each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, making the children laugh. Poor Officer Buckle thinks the cheers and laughter are all for him. The fun illustrations and story won the 1996 Caldecott Medal, which is awarded annually to the most distinguished American picture book for children, and there are good safety tips presented throughout the book.
