Brief summary:
This book is the prelude to the epic trilogy The Lord of the Rings. It tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, who finds himself on an adventure with 13 dwarves and a wizard named Gandolf, travelling far and wide, which is Very unusual for the little creatures called hobbits. During this adventure he discovers the One Ring of Power and brings it back to his Shire home, inadvertently starting a chain of events which leads to the Great War of the Ring.
