Age level(s) this material is appropriate for:
High School & Beyond

Describe the material:
This is a program rather than specific materials. Instead of your child just going on a trip to another country, arrange for him/her to study for a semester, summer or year in a foreign country or for your family to host a foreign exchange student. The opportunities for learning are endless not to speak of the opportunity to become fluent in another language. To succeed in many professions in the future Spanish will be essential. College and universities are not only looking for gifted folks, but those who have been able to go outside the box, for their best scholarships. This gives the student this opportunity.

Contact 1-800-876-2377 or www.afs.org/usa or 1-800-AFS-INFO for more details on both going and hosting.

Skill(s) that the material seeks to develop:
Creativity
Critical Thinking
Problem Solving

If "Other", please describe the skill:
Students learn tolerance and appreciation of their own as well as the culture in which they chose to live. They learn another language and at the same time become great ambassadors and develop a global awareness which is not possible to accomplish while staying home. These students learn independence and responsibily while living with another family. For the student, who isn't ready to attend college, a 13th year program can give him/her an extra year to be more mature and insure success before he/she enters college.
