4 Star Movie Rating

Year of release:
2000

Rated:
G

Genre:
Musical

Big stars:
Ariel, Sebastian

Content that might be unsuitable for younger children:
Morgana, Ursula's evil sister, is pretty menacing.

Quick take:
Ariel has a daughter who yearns for life under the sea. Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle all make appearances. A new evil villian is introduced, Morgana (Ursula's sister). The "star" of the video, Melody, is an enjoyable character. The video is entertaining--but the songs aren't as great as the first Little Mermaid (and not as much humor).

Plot:
Ariel and Prince Eric have a baby daughter, Melody. Upon celebrating her birth with Ariel's father and the other mermaids, evil Morgana shows up and tries to snatch the baby. She wants King Triton's magic trident in return. A fight ensues, the baby is retrieved safely, and Morgana escapes. Ariel protects Melody by building a wall around the castle to keep her in, as well as keeping her mermaid past a secret. Melody grows up, discovers the sea and Sebastian. She has a young pre-teen arguement with her mother ("she doesn't understand me") and sets out to find the answers to her questions. Morgana reappears and turns Melody into a mermaid in another attempt to steal the magic trident. In the end, Ariel must return to the sea as a mermaid in order to rescue Melody and the save the sea from Morgana.
