Age group(s) for which this technique is helpful:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School

Primarily used to improve behavior:
Both At Home and At School

Instructions for using this technique:
Always try to catch your child doing something good. Try not to focus on the bad behaviour. This only creates more negative behaviours. We tend to only focus on this behaviour because this is what is so stressful. Use a reward system, catching him/her being good. I have used poker chips with smiley faces on them. The child earns one every time you see them doing anything at all good. You can then add them up and for every 5 tokens, the child gets a sticker. When the child has received 20 stickers, they have earned a larger prize (eg. maybe free time, computer time, healthy food, etc...).

Other information parents should consider before using this technique:
You can decide, between the child and yourself, how many tokens are given before a sticker is given. Allow the child's input on the larger prize.
