Instructions for using this technique:
My son has been diagnosed with both Pervasive Developmental Disorder and ADHD. One major challenge is getting ready in the morning for school. I used to spend most of my morning repeating instructions over and over again (get your socks on, etc.) and getting frustrated because he would not listen. I would then start yelling. This was not good for either of us. In order to try and prevent both of us from getting upset every morning, I developed a chart on poster board showing each step to getting ready in the morning (ex. I will put on my underwear, I will put on my pants, etc.). I then made smiley faces out of poster board with a velcro strip on the back of each. My son places a smiley face on the chart by each completed step. At the end of the chart, there is a reward for getting ready by himself with little or no reminders (for my son, it is being able to watch TV while eating breakfast). Once using the chart became a habit for my son, our mornings have become much more enjoyable!
