Age group(s) for which this technique is helpful:
Elementary School
Middle School

Primarily used to improve behavior:
Both At Home and At School

Instructions for using this technique:
When a child begins to behave inappropriately, she receives a warning from the parent or teacher that she will have to take a "time out" if she does not behave properly. If she continues to misbehave, she is removed from the room or sent to a corner of the room where she cannot interact with others. She should be made to sit quietly for as long as it takes her to calm down and return to appropriate behavior.

Other information parents should consider before using this technique:
Using "Time Out" only works as long as the child perceives it as a punishment. Therefore, parents and teachers should only use the technique when they are prepared to follow through with the punishment. Time Out will not work if the parent "gives in" to the child and allows them to return to their activities because the child cried excessively or for some other reason.
