Age group(s) for which this technique is helpful:
Elementary School
Primarily used to improve behavior:
Both At Home and At School
Instructions for using this technique:
In this technique you have to identify specifically what you want your child to work on 'fixing'. Whether she is having difficulty staying on task, using correct body basics, accepting consequences, etc. You must identify the most severe inappropriate behavior and treat it with isolation. Choose an effective consequence for your child for when she displays the inappropriate behavior. Keep in mind that just as importantly you must choose an effective positive reinforcer for when she demonstrates the appropriate behavior. Examples for a consequence may be: time out, star removed, marble taken out of the jar, points taken away, etc. Examples for a reinforcer could be: given a star, put a marble in, given extra points, verbal recognition, and hugs are always good, a special treat, a movie for just you and her, time with a favorite book. As with anything you do with your child, you must discover what works best with your child to determine what will work most effectively. The most important step to this technique is consistancy. You must be prepared to administer the consequence/reinforcer for the inappropriate/appropriate behavior every time you see it. The first time you let it slide is the first time you give your child the inch. Once you see improvement on the isolated behavior you can add another inappropriate behavior for your child to work on.
Other information parents should consider before using this technique:
You should make a list of inappropriate behaviors your child displays. Then arrange your list in order, the worst first. Then, make a list of consequenses and reinforcers that you can administer 'consistantly' to achieve the desired results. Once you have made your decision take your idea to the school and speak with the principal/teacher/special education teacher and ask if they will assist you in this plan. Should the school decide not to help you then apply your plan at home. This will get you the desired results that you want at home and will eventually have your child behaving appropriately.
