Age group(s) for which this technique is helpful:
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Primarily used to improve behavior:
Both At Home and At School

Instructions for using this technique:
Caffeinated (Mountain Dew, Coffee, and other drinks) helped me get through graduate school as an ADD student. Now as a teacher and a parent with an ADHD child, I still allow its use. Some will give dirty looks when I let my oldest child have some coffee, but it is better that other medication options.

I keep koosh balls handy for my students and encourage pencil grips or other items they can keep their hands on. One student liked to have a piece of scotch tape in his hand when having to pay attention. The goal is to give them something tactile that isn't going to distract ME the teacher!

Many ADD & ADHD kids are tactile learners. They prefer hands-on. Also, medium point pens on layers of paper just FEEL better to write with.

They are also often kinesthetic (moving) learners. Arranging notes into cause/effect relationships, drawing arrows and symbols, drawing circles around items that are similar, etc. are just a few ideas for arranging information for learning.

Other information parents should consider before using this technique:
There is no such thing as a cookie cutter kid; explore all options and do what is best for your child. ADD/ADHD is often just a label attached to an intelligent child with a learning style that doesn't match our current system of education.

With all that said, I have found myself ready to pull my hair out with my own child's antics! It isn't easy. :)
