Age group:
High School

Type of outliner:
Traditional Outliner

How do you use this outlining system?
To use this outline, have your child leave a two-inch margin on the left side of her paper and a two-inch bottom margin. Each page represents a paragraph. Have your child outline her main points and supporting details just like she would with the Roman Numeral structure -- in a linear, I (main point), A (supporting details), 1(sub-details) fashion. After the main points are outlined, have your child write down the transition sentence between the main points and supporting details in the left margin, and then a summary of the entire paragraph in the bottom margin.

Other important information:
This outlining structure is based on the Cornell note-taking system, developed by Walter Paulke at Cornell University. If your child is a hard-core traditional learner, this is the structure for you.

The above information was written by Jonathan Mooney.
