How do you use this reading approach?
This approach is a form of skimming, but more linear and more advanced. It's based on the premise that over half the words in any given sentence are irrelevant to the core meaning of that sentence. In other words, skipping descriptive words like ôvery,ö transition words like "and" and "therefore,ö and other superficial rhetoric will not hurt comprehension. To do sight reading, have your child approach the text like they would read it cover to cover, but have her only read every fourth word or so and any bold terms. As your child gets more comfortable using this approach, she will become better at choosing what words to focus on and what to let slide.

Other important information:
This is a pretty advanced method and should only be used with advanced readers. This approach can also be used in a non-linear skimming method to increase comprehension.
