What type of tragedy does this advice address:
Death
Acts of Violence

This advice is most appropriate for parents with children in...
Elementary School

Did your family ever deal with this type of tragedy?
Yes

Please describe the tragedy:
The current attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

What were the feelings your child was experiencing?
Fear
Confusion
Sadness
Anger
Helplessness
Hopelessness
Hate

How did you address those feelings and help your child deal with the tragedy?
I was dealing with 7 & 8 year old talented art students I teach - I asked them 3 questions:
What happened?
How did it make you feel?
How would you help others in time of crisis?
And then I asked them to draw their feelings about the event.

Please add any additional comments or suggestions:
Interestingly , the boys drew the event itself, sometimes with a sad face crying tears in the clouds. The girls drew their own crying faces, sometimes with an adult in the picture, sometimes in front of the television set. I was amazed at the different answers to the first question of "What happened?"
