Shoebox with lid; business cards; marker; crayons

Description of reading game:
Cut slit in lid of shoebox and let children decorate box and lid. Print beginning words on business cards (one word to a card). From small pile of cards ask child to select a word and put through slit.

What reading skill(s) does this game use or develop in children?
This game develops beginning reading skills using the sight method.

Other comments or suggestions:
We started with "mommy" and "daddy" and progressed into theme boxes as our son's reading progressed. We also made a word house with the slit in the roof at one point.
