What subject(s) does this advice apply to?
Dealing with long distances between divorced parents

Describe the situation or problem.
Your children may feel sad if their noncustodial parent lives too far away to be part of their daily life. Using technology, and a little planning, you can help your children share their lives with their other parent.

What advice can you offer?
1. Get an e-mail account and encourage regular use.

2. Take photos of all of the important events in your children's life and send via mail or the Internet.

3. Schedule regular phone conversations.

4. Make and send video or audio tapes back and forth.

5. Try to schedule regular visits. Work with your ex to make the arrangements easy for both of you.

6. Enlist your ex as "homework help." When she was in high school my daughter told me that I was "hopeless" in math and physics and that she was going to call her dad to help her with homework questions.

This advice is most appropriate for parents with children in...
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond
