Provide a brief description of this resource:
I think what I am trying to say here is that many communities have tutorial centers that advertise so much and are so accessible we might tend to think of them like a franchise food joint. However, they may have the key to your child's needs And yours, and it does not hurt to check 'em out. The two that I have heard of within a comfortable commute of my home are: Kumon Math and the Sylvan Learning Center.
Such centers do have that "drop 'em off, grocery-shop, then pick 'em up" convenience element many families can identify with. No real harm in that, as long as the tutors are screened properly, skilled, and good with their People Skills. They generally have some standardization there, which may work to your benefit as well as theirs, should you ever be faced with the departure of your tutor for a job elsewhere.
A neighbor's son, presently in 8th grade, found his experience with Sylvan Learning Center to be highly satisfactory. He was back on track in academics within 3-4 months of regular tutorial sessions. The learning center is 20 minutes from his home. The transition from elementary school to jr. high is often a little bit rocky. I don't think his mom (single, employed full time at a management level) would have been able to make time to scour the countryside searching for a private tutor...and things turned out just fine.
You ask the same questions of the tutor at a center, however, so look under the "private tutor" item, too.
Anyone with more direct experience with these 2 tutorial service operations (or others) please feel Very welcome to share!
