What questions should I ask when first talking with this resource?
If your child's teacher is recommending a tutor, find out all you can about your child's specific needs and ask to interview prospective tutors prior to making a decision. Ask the tutor about their previous tutoring experience including descriptions of the age and type of students they feel most comfortable with. You may also want to ask specific details to determine how familiar they are with the material your child is studying in school. I would also ask the tutor how they measure the student's progress and for over what period of time are the tutoring sessions.
What other things should I consider when selecting a tutor or tutoring service?
Since your child may be reluctant to work with a tutor after spending a full day in school, it's important that there be a good fit between your child and the tutor. Taking the time to find a good "match" both skill- and personality-wise can mean the difference between a productive tutoring session and a frustrating one. Most children want to be successful in school and if your child feels that the tutoring sessions are making a positive difference in the classroom, the more agreeable she'll be when it comes time to put in those extra hours of effort!
