What type of fear does this advice address?
Fear of injury, illness, or death
Fears about safety
Fear of natural phenomenon (lightning, the dark)
Other fears

Please describe your child's fear and how it is manifested:
We had a big thunderstorm and tornado warning and the power went out. After a few hours, my 5 yr old son started shaking, then vomited. We thought he was sick until he finally said he was afraid our dog would get lost in the house.

How did/are you help(ing) your child learn to overcome this fear?
I just kept telling him it was ok, the power would come back on soon and in the morning he could watch tv while eating breakfast (a treat). I reminded him the dog was ok, she was sitting on the couch with my husband. My husband brought the dog into our bedroom (where my son was laying) and the dog laid down with him for a while.

Please add any additional comments or suggestions:
I think it was a combination of the storm, the tornado warning & the power outage.

This advice is most appropriate for children in...
