While our family has not had to deal with this, I've known others who have faced it.
A terminal illness is a special type of situation, when a lot of grieving happens well before the loss of a parent, grandparent, or sibling.
No family should try to soldier on without a little assist from friends, family, and perhaps professional caregivers.
One of the best I can recommend is Hospice. The Hospice nurses and personnel are not just there for the person who is ill, to make their last months and days as comfortable as possible (although that's the prime goal). They help the family to focus, they can get some support for children and adults who need to open up and talk about the pain. I have known three families in recent years that sought out Hospice care, and it made a major difference in coming to terms with the situation, for family members of all ages! After the loss, these people were able to mend their lives again, because they knew for certain of the depth of caring others had for them.
