Help the community food bank prepare for the realities of Winter by collecting Canned Goods on/near Halloween.
What steps should be taken to organize this celebration?
Decide whether to incorporate this as an element of a larger celebration (such as a carnival). Decide whether to have any elements of Competition (such as between classrooms) and how to acknowledge/reward participation and reaching of Goals.
If the collection is door-to-door, it needs to be publicized by the local newspapers, so that people will know to expect them. Spread the effort out, vs. saturating a particular area with kids seeking canned goods. Those collecting canned goods might dress in costume (not the dead cheerleader type stuff; the Fruit of the Loom fruit guys and other Food-y items would be most appropriate, attention-getting, and fun!)
Decide how to pack and transport contributions. Accepting goods other than canned (ex: rice, beans)? Emphasis on Proteins, like peanut butter? Providing Wish Lists to shoppers/people you will visit later, door to door?
Even one person and a li'l red wagon could make a difference, but of course it could make a Real difference to get more Organized.
Additional comments:
Can't you just picture kids (or adults) dressed like everything from Soup to Nuts, standing outside a grocery store asking people to Please add something to a Food Bank collection drive? Or a group of Scarecrows and Farmers trick-or-treating with a decorated pick-up truck.
