Describe your Halloween celebration idea:
Community scarecrow building, done either to decorate a house, neighborhood, or town, or as a fundraiser or contest.
What steps should be taken to organize this celebration?
Pick a date and announce the scarecrow building event. Arrange for people to bring or businesses to donate refreshments (donuts and cider, etc.). Pass out lists through leaflets or by posting notices of what people should bring to the scarecrow building. Generally, old clothes, denim pants, flannel or plaid shirts, straw hats are necessary, as is plenty of straw and old newspaper. You'll also need heavy twine, staple guns, garden stakes, brooms, paint, glue, etc.
Spread out tarps or other covering material over the area where the scarecrows will be built so that when you're finished it will be easy to clean up the stray bits of straw.
Stuff the clothes with newspaper to make the scarecrows, and use bits of straw to stick out at the neck, sleeves, and pant leg bottoms.
Additional comments:
After the scarecrow event someone will need to clean up the area where you worked, so make sure you have volunteers willing to take part in that. Also, after the scarecrows are no longer seeming decorative, the clean-up volunteers should collect them all and disassemble, making sure to recycle the recyclables and donate whatever clothes are donatable to charity.
