Description of tip for starting the college search:
If at all possible, request letters of recommendation from teachers and others in August of the senior year. Teachers, particularly the ones that are famous for good letters, are flooded with requests by October (early admissions!). No matter what your familiarity with the adult, send a copy of your resume with a cover letter, requesting a letter of recommendation. Be polite and appreciative!

"Dear Mr. Smith, It's that time already - college applications! If your time permits, I would truly appreciate ..." etc., etc. Keep copies of the cover letters as a record. BE SURE to send a note of thanks after you recieve a recommendation back.

With each application, you'll probably want to send 2-3 different recommendations, so request from SIX adults - that leaves room for those who don't follow through or who (oh no!) turn out to be poor letter writers. You'll also need letters of recommendation to attach to scholarship applications - so make lots of copies!

Who to ask? In addition to teachers, administrators, and counselors, also think about your minister/rabbi, employer, community leaders, and heads of volunteer organizations.
