4 Star Alternative School Rating

Description of this type of school/schooling method:
Certified teacher using "one-room school-house" to make the best of two worlds: home-schooling and private schooling.

Advantages:
Low student-teacher ratio (no more than 10:1) due to zoning and licensing laws. Students of various ages learn from each other in interactive environment. All the advantages of home-schooling plus a certified teacher! Tuition is substantially lower than private schools because of minimal overhead expenses. No hassel with school boards, "district policy," etc. Parents and teacher work closely to build each student's personal learning plan. When changes need to be made, they can be made quickly. Classroom is extended to other areas of the home for projects: kitchen, workshop, backyard, den, etc. Field trips are less expensive-rent a van! Close bond between teacher and students.

Challenges:
This is a new concept; parents have a hard time taking it seriously because its not done in a school building (does the building teach anything?). Limited to Pre-K through grade 6 because of lack of organized sports, clubs, etc.

Tuition/Costs:
$5,000/year or less

Additional comments or suggestions:
If there are other home-based schools currently in operation, I'd love to hear from them! My home-based school website: www.BrightStartDaySchool.homestead.com
